Passive fire protection, installed to tested systems and documented so it can be certified
Halt Fire is a specialist passive fire protection contractor. We install and remediate the fire stopping that keeps a building compartmentalised: service penetrations, openings and voids, fire and smoke dampers, fire-rated duct wrap and fire-rated walls and floors, across Auckland, Northland and North Waikato.
Damyn Blindell
Halt Fire is a New Zealand owned and operated business, founded in Auckland in May 2024 by Damyn Blindell. Damyn is on every quote, every site and every sign-off.
Damyn is a Kiwi tradesman who has worked in construction since 2005 and has specialised in passive fire protection since 2016. He holds the New Zealand Certificate in Passive Fire Protection Installation (Level 3), is completing the Level 4 certificate in Routine Inspections, and is a Producer Statement 3 author, which means he can certify that consented passive fire work was built to the design and tested systems.
His passive fire career started on New Zealand's largest infrastructure project, the Waterview Connection, supervising installation for Global Fire. He then spent six years as Technical Manager and Quality Assurance Manager for two of Auckland's established passive fire contractors, The Passive Fire Company and Flame Stoppers, supervising installation crews and running the quality and compliance side of large commercial and residential projects.
Before that, from 2008 to 2016, he worked overseas supervising interior construction on superyacht and mega yacht builds, including the 141-metre M.Y. Yas in Abu Dhabi and the 88-metre M.Y. Illusion in China. Fire compartmentation on a yacht is designed into every bulkhead, deck and service run, and the interior trades install it to the drawings, specifications and technical data sheets as part of the fit-out. That is where he learned to work to the tested detail rather than around it.
That background shapes how Halt Fire quotes. Years above ceilings and in risers give him an experienced eye for what the drawings and defect lists do not show, so those items are raised and allowed for at the quoting stage rather than surfacing later as variations.
Damyn writes the guides on this site, answers the phone, and is the person who turns up to look at your building.

Four things you can hold us to
Passive fire only counts when it matches a tested system and can be proven afterwards. Everything below follows from that.
We only install tested systems
Every seal, collar, batt and wrap we fit matches a manufacturer's fire test for that combination of service, size and wall or floor type. The range of tested systems has grown a lot, including systems for multiple and mixed service penetrations, and we lean on those first. Where an opening falls outside anything tested, we rebuild it so that a tested system applies. We do not improvise with product.
We document everything
Every penetration is tagged with the system, rating, installer and date, photographed before and after, and entered in a register. On consented work we issue the PS3. On existing buildings we hand everything over to the IQP so they can close out the defects raised against their Form 12A.
We price what we can see, and flag what we can't
On new builds we quote from the fire design and drawings, per penetration or per metre. On existing buildings we quote from the defect report and a site walk, so the price matches the work that has actually been raised. Clients get a clear scope, a clear note of what is excluded, and any risk items identified up front so allowances can be made before work starts.
We tell you when something does not need fixing
Inspection items are sometimes misread or already compliant. We say so.
Who we work with
Main contractors on new builds and fit-outs. Property and facilities managers and body corporates on BWOF compliance. Building owners with a Notice to Fix or a failed inspection. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades who need their penetrations sealed and certified. See our projects for recent work.
What we do not do
Sprinklers, fire alarms and other active systems. Intumescent coating of structural steel. We will tell you who to call.
